Officer injured in pursuit

By Josh Krysak 2 min read

A Uniontown policeman is recovering from minor injuries after police chased a suspect on Main Street Thursday morning. Officer Fred Kampert suffered scrapes, bruising and contusions to his knees during the pursuit.

As a result, police said charges are pending against a Uniontown man.

According to Officer John Kauer, the incident occurred around 2 a.m. when police noticed the man walking on Main Street.

Kauer said police recognized him as a suspect they had chased on foot in an incident earlier in the week. Police attempted to take the man into custody but noted that he immediately started to run.

At that point, Kauer said he used a Taser gun to try and subdue the man but said that he was still trying to run from officers after being hit with one of the Taser probes.

Kauer said Kampert was able to lunge and grab the suspect by his shirt and hold him until other officers arrived.

During the lunge, Kampert struck a concrete planter in a parking lot. Kauer noted that it took four officers to subdue the man and take him into custody.

The man’s name is being withheld pending the formalization of charges.

Kampert was taken to the Uniontown Hospital and treated for abrasions to both of his knees and a contusion on his right knee.
