Helen L. Shavel, 97, of Star Junction, Pa., died Monday, August 4, 2008, in Fauquier Hospital, Warrenton, Virginia.

Helen was… Helen L. Shavel, 97, of Star Junction, Pa., died Monday, August 4, 2008, in Fauquier Hospital, Warrenton, Virginia.

Helen was born June 9, 1911, in Adelaide, Pa., the daughter of George and Susan Hovanec.

Helen enjoyed gardening, reading, quilting and cooking for holidays with her family. She looked forward to traveling and sharing vacations with her children who loved her and will greatly miss her.

Helen was a member of St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church, Perryopolis, Pa.

She is survived by sons: John B. Shavel and wife, Patricia of Connellsville, Pa., Andrew J. Shavel and wife, Patricia of Greensburg, Pa.; a daughter, Louise Kokoszka and husband, Frank of Warrenton, Va., who was her loving dedicated care giver during her declining years. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Lee and John Shavel, Scott, Mark and Kristen Shavel, Michael Kokoszka and Dawn Weber; 10 great-grandchildren with whom she shared her wisdom and unconditional love over many years. Also surviving are her sister, Pauline and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family also wishes to extend gratitude to her neighbors, Ruth Ann Snyder and Theresa and Bob Hajduk and their children: Terri, Christine and Aaron for their support and kindness.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Michael Shavel, two brothers, George and Michael and four sisters, Ann, Mary , Elizabeth and Catherine.

Friends will be received in the BLAIR-LOWTHER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 305 Rear Independence Street, Perryopolis, Pa., today from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. where a Prayer Service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Roman Catholic Church. The Rev. Father Bob Lubic Celebrant.

Interment will be in St. John’s Cemetery, Perryopolis, Pa.

A Wake Service will be held today in the Funeral Home.
