Meeting scheduled Police issue warning

Masontown police are warning area residents to be on the lookout for scam artists and unlicensed solicitors after an incident in the borough this week.

Police Chief Joe Ryan said police learned that a woman was going door-to-door soliciting for money for a diabetes charity without a proper license.

Ryan said that police have since warned the woman regarding solicitation.

He urged borough residents to make sure anyone approaching them for money has been issued a permit by the borough and is actually representing the organization they claim.

He said any residents approached by unlicensed solicitors or someone they feel might be trying to scam them should call 911.

Fund drive held

North Union Township Volunteer Fire Department is currently conducting its annual fund drive for 2008.

The contributions are greatly needed to help with the upkeep and purchase of equipment, training for each firefighter and for day-to-day operations of the department.

Contribution cards with envelopes were mailed to residents last week.

There will be no door-to-door canvassing.

“Any and all contributions will be appreciated,’ said Bob Mankovich, fire chief.
