Reader praises recent column about education
The Aug. 11-17, 2008 “Take Two” column [“Our education system must evolve”] by Bret Moore is a finely crafted intellectually academic portrayal of public education in America. The style of writing presents a challenging read to a middle-class readership. Twice I struggled and stumbled through. I hardily agree that our public education system is in bad shape, particularly in view of the future that is rushing down the pike toward us.
The column leaves me holding a few nagging loose ends. Firstly, the word “evolve” of the column title suggests we have oodles and oodles of time. A more appropriate word may be “revolt.” What would the world be like today were it not for the American Revolution?
Secondly, the column includes religious aspects in the mix. Moore makes two Biblical references leaving some loose ends. Those would have been secured had he included Matthew 22: 15-21. The commonly called “Cafeteria (I’ll have some of this but none of that) Christians” need spoon-feeding.
Last, but not least, Moore states, “We must turn the business of education over to professionals.” Question: How does Moore comprehensively define the word “business” and the word “professionals” as used in the context of his column?
You, Mr. Moore, are on the right track. Keep up the good work.
