Junior Reporter Club

4 min read

This will be the final installment of the Herald-Standard’s Junior Reporter for the summer. We’ll restart the column when school begins in September, and we start receiving letters again.

If you’re interested in becoming a member of the Herald-Standard’s Junior Reporter Club, it’s very easy to join. All you have to do is sit down, write a story and send it to the Herald-Standard. It should be typed or printed very clearly.

The stories can be sent to the Herald-Standard, c/o Junior Reporter Club, 8-18 Church, St., Uniontown, Pa., 15401. They can also be e-mailed to mo’keefe@heraldstandard.com. Each story should contain fewer than 100 words.

Youths writing for the first time receive a letter of congratulations from Herald-Standard Executive Editor Mark O’Keefe, along with a card making them an official member of the club.

Youths getting a second story printed receive another letter from O’Keefe and a coupon for a treat from a local business.

Youths getting more than two stories printed receive a certificate of recognition. Return addresses should also be included with the stories. Anyone under 18 can submit a story, but the suggested ages are 7-12. For more information, call O’Keefe at 724-439-7569.

The topic for September will be, “What did you do on your summer vacation?’ Youths can also write about other topics.

The Movies I Saw This Summer

Hannah Kovscek

Brownsville

This summer I saw three movies. They’re called, “Kit Kittredge,’ “Meet the Robinsons,’ and “Jumongie.’ “Kit Kittredge’ is about a girl named Kit who lived during the Great Depression. I saw this movie at the movie theater. “Meet the Robinsons ‘is about an inventor who kept on trying. I watched it with my cousins Noah, Sarah, and Abram. “Jumongie’ is about a boy who finds a mysterious game and starts playing it. The boy gets sucked up into the game and is thought dead until many years later. I saw this movie with my cousins Georgia and Jude. I liked these movies very much!

My favorite thing about summer is going swimming with my friends. I also like to have fun and enjoy the sunshine. My family is going on many vacations soon. I can’t wait to go. That is what I like most about summer.

Summer is finally here. Are you enjoying the time to sleep in, play outside or best of all no school?

Well if not, you should because it’s your vacation, and you should make the best of it. Some summer ideas may include sports, having a lemonade stand, biking, fishing, and swimming.

Of course, what’s a vacation without sleeping in? You should try and sleep in, if you can. Remember to keep cool and drink a lot just to be safe, when you are outside in hot weather. So remember have a great summer, enjoy, keep cool, drink a lot and sleep in and make lots of memories with laughs and smiles.

Summer’s great

What I like about summer is that I get to swim, play outside with my friends and go on vacation to Myrtle Beach.

I also enjoy sleeping in and planting my garden with my dad.

In memory of my dog Trouble

Hibbs

My dog Trouble was almost 17 years old when she passed away on Nov. 29, 2006.

That day my dad got me a penguin that was a stuffed animal and it was the same color as her.

My mom picked me up from school. She asked us, do you want me to tell you now or do you want to wait until we get home. I said tell me now. She said Trouble died. I tried not to cry in school, but I did.

I loved her. She was like my best friend. I miss her.
