Brownsville board expected to hire, assign teachers

By Charlene Cooper For The 2 min read

The Brownsville Area School Board is expected to hire or reassign teachers tonight to accommodate the district’s first year of full-time kindergarten. According to district officials, existing staff may fill some of the new positions, but at least one position will be a new hire. There may also be several long-term substitute positions that need to be filled.

The three elementary principals conducted candidate interviews over the past week and will give their recommendations to the board at tonight’s meeting, district officials said.

Also discussed at a planning session earlier this week was the final step for state reimbursement of the middle school building project. Plan Con J is the final report submitted to the state in order to receive partial reimbursement for cost of the construction.

The amount of the reimbursement is based on a formula that the state uses. The deadline for the final report is the end of January 2009, but the board said it should have it completed in the next two or three weeks.

In other business, former Superintendent Larry Golembiewski, who officially retired in April, is now the acting superintendent. He will continue as acting superintendent until the position is filled.

At the June board meeting, the position of superintendent was opened and advertised. The application deadline is Sept. 15 and interviews will begin after all applications have been received.

In attendance at Monday’s planning session were Stella Broadwater, Sandra Chan, Ron Dellarose, John Harvey and Francine Pavone.

School starts on Aug. 25 for the Brownsville Area School District.
