Perryopolis to convert vacant lot into public park
PERRYOPOLIS – Borough council said an empty lot on Liberty Street will be made into a public park. At Wednesday’s meeting, council announced that Nancy Petrosky donated the property to the borough in memory of her granddaughter, Lena Petrosky.
Council President Charles Johnson thanked Petrosky for donating the lot and said the future park will beautify the center of town and compliment the State Bank building.
The donated lot is the former site of Perry Pizza & Sub, which burned down in July 2007.
Johnson said plans for the park are in the preliminary stages and that the cost of constructing the park, which includes excavation and other related work, will be worked into the borough’s upcoming budget.
As for other business, council agreed to give the Perryopolis Parks and Recreation Authority $2,500 to have wooden shingles put on the historic Gue House.
Authority representatives attended Wednesday’s meeting and told council members that the roof on the Gue House is leaking badly and needs to be replaced.
The authority said it wanted to use wooden shingles on the roof so that the house retains its authentic appearance.
According to information presented at Wednesday’s meeting, the old roof is 32 years old. The new roof will cost $6,500 and the authority will pay $4,000.
In unrelated business, council appointed Johnson, Councilman Ron Lombard and Mayor Tim Smith to the Perry Area Ambulance Service board.
The five-member board only had two members, council said. A board meeting is scheduled for Monday.
Perryopolis Area Ambulance quit operating in January because of financial reasons and Southwest EMS took over as the borough’s emergency service provider.
In the past, council members stated several concerns with money allegedly left in the former emergency service provider’s account and argue that leftover money was to be turned over to the borough.
The next council meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sept. 10 in the borough building.
