Recycle day
The third Sunday of each month is recycle day for the borough of Perryopolis. Residents of the borough may take their tin or aluminum cans, glass, plastic, newspapers and magazines to the borough garage on Cemetery Road for recycling. Wayne and Scott will be there to help seniors with bundles and bags.
Perry Township residents may recycle at any time at the township shed in Star Junction at the self service recycle bins.
Class of 1978
LuAnn Scaramucci-Summers reports that the 30th-year reunion for the class of 1978 was a success. Forty-six classmates attended and, with guests and spouses, they had a total of 78 folks. Debbie Dutchko Mahalko will post a group photo on Perryopolis.com.
St. John Church
The religious education department of St. John’s Roman Catholic Church is in need of television sets, 19 inch or larger. They also need VCR’s to run the televisions. If you are able to donate either of these items, call Sister Loretta at 724-736-0158.
Cross country
The Frazier Cross country team would like to recognize the accomplishments of senior Rebecca Leonard. Rebecca is an honor student at Frazier High School who ranks near the top of her class. Rebecca’s hard work and dedication to running paid off with an overall first-place finish at the Dawson Grange Country Classic 3.5-mile race, which she won with a time of 29 minutes. Recently, Rebecca participated in the Fayette County Relay for Life held at Laurel Highlands High School to help raise funds for cancer research. Rebecca is also very active in 4-H. This year her market goat won reserve champion at the Fayette County Fair. Congratulations go to Rebecca.
Pioneer Days
The Perryopolis Area Heritage Society is making preparations for Pioneer Days, which will be held on the first weekend in October.
Crafters who are interested should call Bob DeCroo at 724-326-8741. Vendors who would like to participate should call Shirley Baldwin at 724-736-2955.
The band “Full Tilt” will play on Oct. 3 at Sampey Park from 7 to 10:30 p.m. The cost is $5 per person. Tickets are available from any PAHS member.
The PAHS food booth will be for rent during the Pioneer Days weekend. Any individual, church or organization interested should call Shirley DiVirgilio at 724-736-4078.
First Christian Church
The congregation of the First Christian Church donated 144 pairs of shoes to the Soles 4 Souls mission to Change the World One Pair at a Time. They received a letter from Morgan Gunter-Evans, coordinator of the service to thank everyone who donated.
Kids Club is in the planning stages. Anyone interested in helping with this important youth ministry every Monday evening is asked to attend the planning meeting on Monday at 6:30 p.m. in the Family Life Center.
The ice cream social will be held on Aug. 24 at 6 p.m. Photos of the mission trip to Greensburg, Kan., will be available for viewing. Those attending are asked to bring their favorite ice cream topping to share.
Help our troops call home by donating any old cell phone to Cell Phones for Soldiers. This project recycles old cell phones and gives them to our men and women in the armed services over seas. To check out this worthy cause, go to their Web site at www.cellphonesforsoldiers.com. There are postage free mailers on the church bulletin board that you can use to send in your old phone. The mailer can hold two phones.

Please remember that the deadline for the Perryopolis news is Tuesday evening. Ruthie’s boss has given her another job, and she’s spending a lot more time at the office. She doesn’t get home until nearly 7 p.m. Articles e-mailed, left at the mailbox on the railing at 352 Circle St. or phoned in after Tuesday evening may not make it into the following Sunday’s column.
