Masontown man faces assault charges

By Josh Krysak 1 min read

A man is facing assault charges after he allegedly attacked a man as he walked in Masontown on Aug. 8. Masontown police chief Joe Ryan said Theo Johnson, 22, of Masontown was charged before Magisterial District Judge Michael Defino with aggravated assault, simple assault, recklessly endangering another person and harassment following the alleged attack on Richard Butts, also of Masontown.

Ryan said police found Butts walking on River Avenue around 4 p.m., with multiple injuries to his face.

Butts told police that Johnson assaulted him a few hours before on South Washington Street, Ryan said.

He told police that he did not know why Johnson assaulted him and added that Johnson has attacked him before, Ryan said.

Ryan said Butts was taken by Fayette EMS to Uniontown Hospital for treatment.

Ryan noted that after taking written statements from Butts regarding the assault, police arrested Johnson without incident.

He denied any involvement in the alleged attack, Ryan said.

A preliminary hearing will be held at a later date before Magisterial District Judge Randy S. Abraham.
