The more things change…

2 min read

My name is Nola (Johnston) Elliott. I’ve been living in Blacksburg, Va. for about 40 years, but I was born and grew up in Waynesburg. I had to laugh when I received the Aug. 8-15, 2008 edition of the Greene County Messenger. The picture of the little gal in the kiddy car at the fair brought back a memory of a picture I had cut from a local newspaper some 28 years ago. I apparently had come home for a visit during fair time and off we went to the grand event. I don’t remember having been at the fair, but I did remember that picture.

After digging through several picture albums and a few old dusty scrapbooks, I came across the picture. I’m sending a photocopy of the old picture…What struck me so funny was the uncanny resemblance of the little gal in the 1980 photo and the one from this past issue.

I haven’t a clue who the little girl in the 1980 picture might be, but the little boy with his “Nana” is my son with my mom. (Note the son was being raised in the proper “Southern Redneck” tradition [because he was] wearing a “Dukes of Hazzard” shirt.)

My mom has since passed-away-and the little tike is about 6′ 3″ now.

I managed to exert a little Yankee upbringing along with the Southern influence and he turned out pretty well.

Just thought you might enjoy seeing how much the past remains the same … when it comes to the Greene County Fair…

Best Wishes,

Nola Elliott
