PERRYOPOLIS – The former high school and middle school principal in the Frazier School District will now serve as part-time special programs coordinator. Kathleen Janci, who retired this summer, agreed to take on the position at a salary of $120 per day with extended family benefits following action taken this month by the school board.

Additionally, Gerry Dawson, who resigned earlier this year as technology coordinator, was re-hired by the board at a salary of $60,000 including benefits.

In conjunction with the district’s pre-kindergarten program, Ken Meadows, elementary school principal, was given $5,000 additional compensation for his combined duties.

The board also hired Joseph Scalise as the high school/middle school physical education teacher at a salary of $26,000 after rescinding the motion to hire Melissa Reed each based on the recommendation of the administrative staff and the board.

The board also agreed to hire Heather Brubaker as an earth and space teacher at a salary of $36,801 following the resignation of Jason Pappas from the position who also served as freshman class and junior class sponsor.

At the request of Tom Shetterly, business manager and newly appointed athletic director, the board agreed to create and advertise for a 12-month position of assistant athletic director with a starting salary of $2,500.

Shetterly said after serving in the assistant position last year he saw the need for inventory control for uniforms and annual equipment purchases.

Shetterly said while athletic coaches were previously responsible for keeping track of their equipment various changes in the positions made it hard to locate inventory sheets.

“I made the recommendation for an assistant athletic director with the primary responsibility to keep accurate records for inventory and to report any damaged or missing equipment,” added Shetterly.

In a separate personnel matter, the board agreed to hire Shauna Balog of Perryopolis, Crystal Milko and Amy Mastowski, both of Dawson as teachers’ aides.

The board also heard from Director John H. Lowery III who requested an ad hoc committee be formed to further discuss future renovations to Perry and Central elementary schools.

Lowery suggested the superintendent also be involved, while Dave Simmons, board member and chairman of the building, grounds and maintenance committee, agreed that prior reports to repair water problems at Central have yet to be addressed.
