Woman driving van strikes 2 police officers

By Josh Krysak 2 min read

CALIFORNIA – A minivan driven by a Uniontown woman struck two California police officers early Thursday. State police said that around 1:30 a.m. California officers Mark Costello and John Hackinson were working on Third Street as the woman was traveling north on Third Street.

Trooper Andre Stenson said the officers were working from two police cruisers, which were parked on the east side of the road with their emergency lights activated when the incident occurred.

As the woman’s car passed the officers, the passenger side mirror of her minivan struck Costello in the back, Stenson said.

The woman continued to travel down Third Street and struck the driver’s side door of Hackinson’s patrol car as Hackinson was seated in the vehicle, Stenson said.

The woman continued down the street and struck an unoccupied car parked about 25 yards away, Stenson said.

The woman did not stop and had to be pursued by police. Stenson said she was eventually stopped a short distance away.

The woman’s identity is being withheld pending the formalization of charges.

According to California police Chief Richard Encapera, Hackinson was “shaken up” in the incident but his injuries do not appear serious. Costello was not injured.

He said the officers were making an arrest at a bar on Third Street when the incident occurred.

No further information was available Thursday.
