Obituary comments can be read, posted
One of my many duties as the Herald-Standard’s executive editor is to look over comments to our Web site, Heraldstandard.com. Basically, people can write comments about any story listed on our Web site. I then review the comments to make sure they’re not libelous or contain any swear words. If not, then I allow them on our Web site for anyone to read.
While most of the comments are fairly typical of letters to the editor, there are others that are poignant and touch your heart. Those are the comments for obituaries. People write lovingly about friends and family members that have passed away. The problem is that I wonder how many people are aware of these comments. Invariably when I talk to people, they have no idea that such comments are being posted on our website. And they’re very grateful when I tell them how to go about reading the comments.
We’re trying to remedy the problem by running information blocks periodically on the obituary page. Basically to either post or read a comment, go to our Web site at www.heraldstandard.com. Once you get to the site, press on the bar for obituaries. That will be give you a list of obituaries and you can click on the obituary you want to read. At the end of the obituary, there’s space to write a comment. You can either read the comments already there or just post your own comment.
I thought I would share some recent comments to give you a better idea of what I’m writing about. Listed below are the name of the deceased, comments and the name of the person making the comments along with their e-mail address.

Susan, my deepest sympathy for the loss of your father. Uncle Roger, Aunt Irene, Aunt Jeannie, and Uncle Andy always found the time to come to all my special moments. I will never forget them sitting at both my high school and college graduation with my uncles. Your parents were truly extraordinary people. Their memories will live on forever! My prayers are with you and your family. Love Heather (McMannes) Wise.
