Born in Bobtown, Pennsylvania the fourteenth of fifteen children of William and Mary Murphy Smitley.

He is survived by his long time companion, Carol Ames; two brothers: Reuben (Bud) Smitley of Harrisburg, Pa., Fred Smitley of San Jose, CA.; and two sisters: Carol Houtz and Darlene Houtz both of State College as well as many nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews.

Preceding him in death were brothers and sisters, Charles Raymond, William, Richard, Curtis, Loretta, Herman, Pearl, Myrtle, Lovina (Lovie) and Ben as well as his former wife, Barbara Spicer Smitley.

Donald was a longtime resident of State College having moved here in 1955. He graduated from State College High School in 1958 after which he attended Pennsylvania College of Technology in Williamsport, Pa.

After completing his training as an architectural draftsman he went to work for Jack W. Risheberger and Associates from 1960-1978. Following that he was employed by the Centre County Housing Authority in Bellefonte from 1978-1983. During this time he developed his own architectural drafting firm and this was his livelihood until his retirement.

Donald was an active member of the State College community serving in various positions on the board of Easter Seals, Hemlock Girl Scout Council, and Jaycees (from whom he was chosen Jaycee of the Year and received the Key Man award). He was an Associate Member of the Home Builders Association and served on the Community Development Block Grant Program in the State College Borough. He was a strong advocate for Citizens for Barrier Free Living, Centre for Independent Living and The State Theatre.

Despite having muscular dystrophy and eventually using a power wheelchair Donald believed that each of us has an original way of being human and he never let his disability define or limit him. He found ways to live life on terms he chose. When encountering obstacles he developed unique ways around them instead of being defeated. Even in inclement weather he trekked from his home at Addison Court to have breakfast at his beloved Corner Room Restaurant. After retiring he traveled to Europe, Belize, Guatemala, and many times to Mexico often spending months on the road. Whatever their status in life, no one was a stranger to Donald. They were just people he hadn’t met yet. His inspiring smile beneath his signature Greek fisherman’s hat was a common sight around State College especially in the warmer months. He spent many happy hours at the intersection of College Avenue and Allen Street greeting old friends, making new ones and spinning his stories. Many knew him that way even if they never knew his name. Donald was an avid movie fan and really enjoyed playing Hearts on his computer.

A bright light has been extinguished in State College and he will be greatly missed by family and friends.

A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be held in the CELEBRATION HALL by Hoag’s Catering, 2280 Commercial Boulevard, State College, Pa., on February 15 from 2 to 5 p.m.
