Mayor Fike leads couple through wedding vows

By Steve Ferris 2 min read

A Uniontown couple that has been friends since they were children shared the ultimate Valentine’s Day gift a day early on Wednesday when they got married in Uniontown City Hall.

Mayor Ed Fike led Robert Gleason and the former Elizabeth Ferencak through their vows and their first kiss as husband and wife. “We wanted to be the first, but he already did one,” Ferencak said before the ceremony.

It was the second wedding Fike conducted in the five weeks he has been in office and the third is scheduled for today.

“There are good things that happen in City Hall,” Fike said. “One of the more positive and pleasurable moments since I’ve been here. Soon, the city will shine just like that wedding. That’s my vision.”

The Gleasons overcame a rough day Tuesday to make their wedding shine.

“It’s been a rough 24 hours,” Ferencak said before the wedding.

She said her dog got sick, the wedding cake she made using rice flour because she is wheat-intolerant fell over and the restaurant where they planned to have the reception, 30 East Main in Uniontown, closed for remodeling.

However, everything worked out.

The dog is well again, the cake survived the fall and the reception was moved to the Highland House in Uniontown.

Ferencak said the most important part was the man she was about to marry.

“We’ve known each other since I was 10 years old. It’s nice to know you’re marrying your best friend,” she said.

Her two children, Jacob and Rachel; her parents, Ed and Faith Ferencak; and her brother, Edmund Ferencak; were among the handful of family, friends and city employees who attended the service.
