Police seek robbery suspect

Herald-Standard Uniontown police are looking for a man who robbed Byers Market on Connellsville Street Saturday evening.

Police said the man allegedly attempted to shoot two employees after both refused to give him more money.

According to a report filed by Officer Mike Garrow, police were dispatched to the store at 5:24 p.m. for a robbery involving a man with a handgun.

Garrow said employees told police the man entered the store, threatened them with a gun and demanded money from the register.

“He demanded money from the register and I gave it to him,” store clerk Mary J. Thomas told police.

According to Garrow’s report, Thomas said the man wanted even more money and tried to shoot her when she didn’t give it to him.

Police said the man allegedly pointed the gun at Thomas and pulled the trigger, but said the gun jammed when he tried to shoot it.

Thomas and store clerk William Campbell told police the man attempted to shoot them at least three times, Garrow said.

The employees told police the man even racked the slide back and forth in an attempt to clear the chamber of the gun. While doing so, a .22-caliber bullet was ejected from the gun, police said.

Garrow said the live round was located on the floor just below the cash register.

Police said the suspect is described as being a young black male in his late teens or early 20s. Police said the man is about 5 feet 6 inches tall and 170 pounds.

He was last seen wearing a black quilted three-fourth-length coat and a hood, in addition to a red bandana pulled up over his nose during the robbery, police said.

Garrow said employees told police the man ran up Connellsville Street toward Lafayette Elementary School.

Police said officers scoured the area and located two males who matched the description; however, employees said neither of the males was the robber.

According to police, a moneybox stolen from Byers Market was located Sunday morning in an alley behind the store.

The box was taken to the police station and is being processed for fingerprints, police said.

Anyone with information regarding the robbery is asked to call police at 724-430-2929.
