Grateful dog owner thanks firefighters who saved pet
When several South Union Township volunteer firefighters responded to a dog kennel on fire last month, they initially thought that two dogs had escaped the flames while a third had died. But when Capt. Jody McCoy, Lt. Todd Miscovich and firefighter Rick McCoy started to quell the flames with a water cannon at the kennel on Williams Street Extension, they got a pleasant surprise.
“She must have been hiding back in the corner, but when we got some water on it and it was just smoldering, she came running out,” Miscovich said.
A month after she ran out of her burning dog box, Sage, a yellow Labrador retriever, and her owner, Patricia Georgiana, stopped at the fire department to personally thank the firefighters for their service.
“This has been pretty emotional for me,” Georgiana said. “I live alone and my dogs are my family. I just wanted to let the firefighters know how grateful I am.”
Georgiana said that when she got word that the kennel behind her residence had caught fire Jan. 16, she jumped out of bed at Mon Valley Hospital in Carroll Township, Washington County, and rushed home.
“I was at the hospital for knee surgery the next day, but nothing was keeping me away from my pets,” Georgiana said.
When she arrived at her home, she said couldn’t find Sage or her other two dogs, Velvet and Sophie.
“I was looking and looking and then I spotted them all along the road on Derrick Avenue,” she said.
Miscovich said that after Sage ran from the flames, she hopped a nearby fence and was gone.
“The other two dogs had run out right away and were running around the alley when we arrived,” Miscovich said. “A tenant of hers (Georgiana’s) said that the third dog was dead and it appeared that was the case. Then she ran past us.”
None of the animals was injured in the blaze.
“I am just so blessed that the firefighters got there and put the fire out and rescued Sage,” Georgiana said. “I can’t thank them enough.”
