South Union supervisors approve rezoning request
South Union Township supervisors voted Monday to rezone a piece of property after tabling the matter at last month’s meeting. In December, supervisors tabled an action that would have rezoned 5 acres of land at the intersection of Route 21 and Balsinger Road from conservation (C-1) to business (B-1).
Heritage Realty recently purchased the property and requested the zoning change; however, supervisors said last month that they were unwilling to rezone the property without knowing exactly what the real estate company planned to do with the property.
Supervisors agreed to rezone the property after hearing from Brad Jose, who owns half the real estate company.
Jose attended Monday’s meeting and told supervisors plans call for Heritage Realty to operate an office out of an existing structure on the property.
Heritage Realty may consider building a plaza of some sort on the property in 10 to 20 years, Jose said.
Supervisor Thomas Frankhouser said the rezoning request was tabled last month because supervisors wanted to make sure plans didn’t include any inappropriate development.
“We want to do what’s best for the entire township,” he said.
Frankhouser and Supervisor Rick Vernon voted to rezone the property from C-1 to B-1 following a public hearing, held in conjunction with Monday’s meeting. Supervisor Robert Schiffbauer was absent.
As for other business, supervisors voted to purchase a 2008 four-wheel-drive cab and chassis, 12-foot spreader and 10-foot plow and hitch.
Supervisors also agreed to either trade or sell two other vehicles, a 1984 Ford F-600 dump truck with 37,923 miles and a 1997 Ford F-350 truck equipped with a spreader box and plow with 11,339 miles.
In unrelated business, supervisors voted to hire Robert A. Madison Jr. as a part-time recreation employee.
The next township meeting is scheduled for 4 p.m. Feb. 6 in the municipal building.
