No More Kings – No More Kings

By Clint Rhodes 2 min read

The self-titled debut album by No More Kings may have slipped by you in 2007. If it did, don’t feel bad. This gem of an album slipped under my radar as well. It wasn’t until a few weeks ago that I managed to catch one of the band’s quirky videos, piquing my attention. Upon further inspection, I found a funky, fresh and fun sound neatly packaged as a tribute to the 1980s. The band delivers deliciously witty songs, filled with pop culture references from Charlie Brown to “Knight Rider.” The Los Angeles band got their name from an episode of “School House Rock,” and apparently so did their knack to turn catchy melodies into infectious symphonies of playful delight. The band’s sound is gaining support as they won Best Pop/Rock Album of 2007 and Best Band Website of 2007 at the Independent Music Awards. “Sweep the Leg” is the standout track that serves as an ode to “The Karate Kid.” The accompanying video is a classic, reuniting most of the original male cast of the film. Sounding like a mixture of Maroon 5 and Fountains of Wayne, No More Kings should prove that they are more than just a novelty. I can guarantee that I won’t be caught by surprise on the release of their next album. Treat yourself this week and check out the band’s “Sweep the Leg” video on YouTube. Once you’ve enjoyed it (be careful of the crane kick), No More Kings will be strangers no more.
