Woman recalls experience on game show

The price of a dresser eluded Angela Hartley of Carmichaels and cost her a chance to compete for more elaborate prizes, but she said her experience on “The Price Is Right” was priceless. “It was a ton of fun,” said Hartley, 24.

A traveling nurse working in San Diego, Calif., Hartley said she and a fellow nurse went on a two-hour road trip to Los Angeles on a day off from work in mid-November to check out some shows being filmed at a television studio.

Hartley said tickets to the shows are free and watching the filming seemed like a fun way to enjoy a day off.

Staffers at The Price Is Right studio interviewed audience members in groups, asking for their names and occupations.

“It’s supposedly a random thing, but I don’t suppose they do interviews without a reason,” Hartley said.

When the filming began, the announcer summoned contestants with the familiar “come on down.”

The show was winding down and it was time for the final contestant, when Hartley received a shock.

“I was the last contestant called. It was a shock to even be called,” Hartley said. “I didn’t hear my name called. They called it three times. It was so noisy. It’s incredibly loud in there: clapping and people yelling. It was hard to hear the announcer. It was fun though.”

The contestants had to guess the price of a dresser to get up on stage with host Drew Carey. The contestant making the closest guess that didn’t exceed the price of the dresser would win it and a chance to compete for the showcase.

“Not a hard item to guess,” Hartley said. “I was so overly nervous. I didn’t even know what to say. I didn’t even get to go up on stage. I didn’t win, but it was a good experience.”

The show with Hartley’s surprise appearance will air on Jan. 24 on CBS.

She said the woman who won the showcase won a car in the game that earned her a spot in the showcase showdown.

Hartley wasn’t that lucky that day, but she said she would gladly do it again.

She graduated from Albert Gallatin High School and received her nursing degree from California University of Pennsylvania.

Hartley is the daughter of Jim and Patty Hartley of Carmichaels.

She said she just finished a four-month stint at a hospital in San Diego and will be traveling to a hospital in Denver, Colo., where she will work for three months in the intensive care unit.

The agency she works gives its nurses choices, allowing them chose hospitals they want to work in.

“I like to ski, so I’m going to Denver now,” Hartley said.
