Scouting for Girls – Scouting for Girls

By Clint Rhodes 2 min read

Looking for a quick pick me up? Look no further than the self-titled debut release by Scouting for Girls. This charming trio from London package a collection of relationship-themed songs filled with heartache, drama and humor. Lead singer Roy Stride guides the group with his piano-driven style, sounding at times like a poppy Counting Crows. The band’s instantly likeable songs include the singles “She’s So Lovely,” “Elvis Ain’t Dead” and “It’s Not About You.” This solid effort will have you smiling and singing along in no time. There are as many clever lyrics as there are lush harmonies contained in each tale of love and heartache. “It’s Not About You” finds Stride confessing, “I don’t know how to love you, but I love you so.” “The Airplane Song” contains the cold reality of a troubled relationship. “I went out for the day, and she left for the year” pretty much says it all. “Mountains of Navaho” continues the abandonment issue with Stride announcing, “You emptied my wallet, and you stole my smokes.” Ouch, now that really hurts – she could have at least left the smokes behind. Perhaps the wittiest word play is found on “Elvis Ain’t Dead” with the line “I think I need a love lobotomy.” That’s a classic in my book. I bet Joey Ramone got a few chuckles out of that one. “James Bond” finds the band taking a break from subjects of the heart to focus on the coolness that is Agent 007. “I wish I was James Bond, just for the day/Kissing all the girls, blow the bad guys away.” What guy hasn’t wished to save the world and get the girl just like Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig? The overall effort by Scouting for Girls is as smooth as Bond’s shaken, not stirred martini.
