Scottdale to honor talent of theater participants
SCOTTDALE – The public is invited to join with Geyer Performing Arts Center actors and actresses on the red carpet to pay tribute to those that shared their onstage talent during 2007. The Premier Geyer Awards Night will be held Saturday at the theater.
“The awards night will recognize those gifted actors, directors and crews that made 2007 an entertaining year,” said Brad Geyer, center board member.
Similar to a Hollywood event, the local awards ceremony will include a red carpet, flashing camera lights, entertainment and refreshments.
“Our much loved Dottie Davis will serve as the emcee and has put together a very entertaining evening,” said Geyer. “Dottie (Davis) has selected some of our beloved friends as presenters and performers.
“Following the show, the winners will be invited on stage to toast all of our nominees and friends who have helped the theater throughout 2007.”
Awards will be given for the best musical, best show, director, actor, actress, supporting male and female roles, male and female vocals, comedic duo, costumes, set design and best kiss.
Geyer will present The Golden Doorknob Award, similar to the Hollywood lifetime achievement award.
Geyer is the great-great-grandnephew of the theater’s founder, William Geyer. The Geyer family operated several businesses in Scottdale during the late 1800s, including the Geyer Hotel.
Andrew Geyer owned and operated the opera theater until 1912, when some of the family descendants speculate he lost it while playing a game of cards.
Although the name has changed over the course of time, Brad Geyer explained that performances have been drawing larger crowds to “Scottdale’s Little Off-Broadway Theater.”
The public, meanwhile, is invited to the award ceremony that begins at 7 p.m. A reception will be held following the event.
Formal attire is recommended, but not required.
