George Harold Ellenberger, 86, of Vanderbilt, Pa., peacefully passed away in his home surrounded by his loving family on January… George Harold Ellenberger, 86, of Vanderbilt, Pa., peacefully passed away in his home surrounded by his loving family on January 15, 2008.
He was born on July 4, 1921, in Rainytown, Pa. He was the son of the late John and Estella Orbin Ellenberger. He was protestant by faith.
He was preceded in death by sisters, Nellie Anderson, Helen Whoric, Frances Riter, Ethel Heimbaugh and Odessa Ellenberger and brothers, James, Frank, Donald, Ray, Sanford and Charles.
George Harold is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Betty Martin Ellenberger; a son, Kevin H. Ellenberger of Washington, Pa.; a daughter, Renee J. Ellenberger of Fairmont, W. Va.; a granddaughter, Amanda Ellenberger of Washington, Pa.; a grandson, Martin Ellenberger of Dayton, Ohio; and one great-grandson, Devin Kelly of Washington, Pa. He is also survived by sisters: Mary Pearle Boyd of Charleroi, Pa., Carolyn Ellenberger of Vanderbilt, Pa.; one brother, the Rev. Robert Ellenberger of Connellsville, Pa.; and numerous loving nieces and nephews.
A 1939 graduate of Dunbar Township High School, he was awarded two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star while serving with the 4th Infantry Division in France and Germany during World War II. He was employed by United States Steel in Donora, the Pennsylvania Department of Highways and retired from the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission. He was a 50 year member of the Emery Lewis Pratt Post of the American Legion and a member of the American Disabled Veterans.
Friends will be received in the RALPH E. GALLEY FUNERAL HOME, Dawson, Pa., today, January 18, 2008, until 1 p.m. the hour of service with the Rev. David McElroy officiating.
Interment will be in the Dickerson Run Union Cemetery.
