Rockslides endanger Old Rt. 88

By Christine Haines 1 min read

CENTERVILLE – Old Route 88 between West Brownsville and Low Hill remains closed today due to the threat of rockslides. According to Pennsylvania Department of Transportation District 12 spokeswoman Valerie Petersen, a boulder came off the hillside above Old Route 88 around 9 p.m. Friday in the area of Lower Spring Road.

Petersen said the rock landed in the center of the road and additional unstable rock needs to be removed from the hillside before the road can be reopened.

“They’re going to use a chisel-type attachment on one of their machines,” Petersen said.

PennDOT crews had planned to remove the unstable rock on Tuesday, but the snow shifted the emphasis from rock clearing to keeping the roads clear of snow and ice. Petersen said that barring further snow, the rock should be cleared and the road reopened by Wednesday evening.

Petersen said if more snow hits the area Wednesday, the rock clearing would be delayed until Thursday.

Traffic is being detoured onto Route 88 and Route 40. Petersen said Denbo residents are able to access their homes from the Low Hill side of Old Route 88. The road remains closed to through-traffic.
