Clark Slater – Long Way From Home

By Clint Rhodes 2 min read

The debut release from this talented local artist contains plenty to be excited about. The singer/songwriter has paid his dues and is now primed for stardom. Slater has certainly left his mark on the local music scene, first as a member of Push (1996 to 1999) and later by playing guitar on Bill Deasy’s “Good Day No Rain.” Now going it alone, Slater creates a collection of songs about life, love, loss and the faith that keeps it together. Slater’s smooth vocals, passionate lyrics and honest sound combine to strike an emotional chord that leaves a permanent soul tattoo. “Bring the Love” is a terrific opener that is better than most music currently being played on the radio. The title track finds Slater sounding very much like the Gathering Field with a great beat and strong vocal performance. Slater delivers songs filled with clarity and depth, such as the powerful “Memories of Us” and the simply beautiful “I Will Follow.” On “Getting to Know You,” Slater’s voice is warm and inviting – similar to Jack Johnson. Later, he sounds like Steven Curtis Chapman on “One More Night” singing, “What would you say if you had but one last chance to make it right?” Long Way From Home is an album that will put you through a variety of emotions, ranging from smiles to tears. Good artists have a way of doing that and Slater is certainly in this category. Treat yourself (and someone special) to an early Valentine’s Day gift. Check out Slater at the Christian W. Klay Winery on Saturday, Feb. 9. With lyrics like “You’re my love/You’re my dream/In my heart/You’ll always be,” let Slater do all the talking and enjoy the show.
