Dawson homecoming this weekend
DAWSON – Nearly 135 years ago the borough of Dawson began to show signs of growth and development. Over that period of time, the community and its people have contributed to local, state and national history and beginning Friday and continuing through Sunday, the Greater Tri-Town Historical Society will celebrate its past with a variety of activities for all ages.
“It is an opportunity for everyone to come together and have a lot of fun,” said society member Patty Lint.
The 2008 Homecoming Weekend begins Friday with entertainment by the musical group “Acoustic Gold – Roy Hess and Friends” at the Philip G. Cochran Memorial Methodist Church beginning at 7 p.m.
Built in 1926, the cathedral-like church was built as a tribute to its namesake by his wife, Sarah B. Cochran after he died. She was also the benefactor for the Linden Hall mansion.
The Cochran family developed mines and coke yards in the Dawson area.
The celebration weekend will continue Saturday with the Tri-Town 5K and 10K run and walk race at 8:30 a.m. Registration begins at 7 a.m.
At 11 a.m., “Father and Son” will perform with a parade to begin at 1 p.m.
This year the historical society will honor those that will celebrate their 90th birthday in 2008.
Lint said cars would be provided for those joining in the festivities.
After the parade, the musical group “Girlz In Black Hats” and the “Del Sols” will perform.
At 6 p.m., the traditional duck race will be held on the Youghiogheny River. Ducks can be purchased from any historical society member at a cost of $2. The owner of the three ducks that first cross the finish line will be awarded a monetary prize.
The musical group “High Ryder” will perform at 7 p.m. with a fireworks display to conclude the day’s activities.
On Sunday, the historical society will host a picnic on the lawn of the Cochran House from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A variety of food will be available. Cost is $7 for those over the age of five. There is no charge for those five years of age and under.
A variety of antique and classic car and trucks, motorcycles and special interest cars will be on display from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
At the same time, a Chinese auction will be held. The historical society has collected a variety of items for the auction, including hanging baskets, totes, pet items and gift baskets.
The weekend will conclude with an ecumenical church service following the auction.
