Fan Hollow Road closed indefinitely due to collapsed shoulder

By Steve Ferris 3 min read

LEMONT FURNACE – North Union Township supervisors on Tuesday said Fan Hollow Road has been closed because the shoulder collapsed and the road will remain closed until repairs can be made. “The whole shoulder fell 4 or 5 feet,” Supervisor Robert Tupta said.

He said he believes truck traffic from the Mon/Fayette Expressway construction project caused the collapse and did a great deal of damage to Northgate Highway, which was built last as a part of the expressway project.

Tupta said he also believes the contractors will pay to repair the shoulder of Fan Hollow Road and repave Northgate Highway.

The supervisors adopted a resolution establishing 10-ton vehicle weight limits on Fan Hollow Road, Old Pittsburgh Road, Smith Road, Wendy Drive, Oliver Road, Beason Hill, Barbara Drive, Ester Drive and Brushwood Road.

The shoulder along Fan Hollow collapsed about three weeks ago, he said.

“It’s been a nightmare for us,” Tupta said.

Meanwhile, supervisors and residents said the township’s new code enforcement officer has been a dream come true.

Kyle Sneddon, a former Uniontown police chief and a member of Fayette County Drug Task Force, started working as a part-time code enforcement officer on May 21.

Supervisors and residents said he has done more in the last four weeks than previous code officers have done in years.

Sneddon said he has received 31 complaints from residents since May 31 and has been busy responding to them.

Some of the complaints were about outdoor burning and weeds, he said, adding that he issued warnings to most of the violators and citations are pending against others.

Sneddon said a Lemont Furnace home that was damaged in a fire has been demolished and a home on Fairview Street that has structural violations will be demolished.

Action being taken against owners for four other homes could result in those homes being demolished, Sneddon said.

“We don’t want to overwhelm him too quick,” Tupta said.

Sneddon is working 20 hours a week and is being paid $12,000 a year with no benefits.

Supervisor Curtis Matthews said a second code officer will be hired after offices and computers for both officers have been set up.

Outdoor burning of yard waste only is allowed on Wednesdays and Saturdays, Matthews said.

In other business, the supervisors:

– Authorized solicitor Donald McCue to begin the process of acquiring property on Old Braddock Road needed for a water storage tank for the Mount Independence waterline extension project.

Supervisors said they would advertise for bids for the water line project soon.

– Announced they plan to apply to the state Department of Environmental Protection for a grant to buy a dump truck to haul yard waste to the compost site at the Greater Uniontown Joint Sewage Plant.

– Awarded a fuel contract for $31,717 for 10,000 gallons of gasoline and $39,440 for 10,000 gallons of diesel to Freedom Fuel, the only bidder for the contract.

– Awarded contracts for various road materials to Coolspring Stone Supply and Golden Eagle Construction.
