Perryopolis council tables contract

By Josh Krysak 2 min read

PERRYOPOLIS – Borough council tabled a motion to award a contract for a storm sewer project until they can determine how to pay for the plan. Council said Wednesday that they received a low bid of $61,110 from Robert Chuboy Contracting of Perryopolis for the Constitution Street storm sewer improvement project, which calls for the installation of pre-cast manholes and 15 inch storm sewer line.

The bid also included a separate estimate of $25,580 for a second section of the proposed storm sewer project.

Council had allocated $40,000 in liquid fuels money to pay for the entire project.

In anticipation of bids coming in higher than the $40,000 earmarked for the plan, council President Charles Johnson and councilmen Paul Black and Leonard Lynch met with state Rep. Deberah Kula, D-North Union Township, about potential state funding for the project.

Johnson also noted that he has been in contact with state Sen. Richard A. Kasunic, D-Dunbar, regarding potential grants for the plan.

The council has yet to receive word on the status of the requests.

Councilman Ron Lombard, who is chairman of the budget and finance committee, said in May that the borough has $175,000 of liquid fuels money saved but added that he wouldn’t want to spend the majority of it on the storm sewer improvement project.

Lombard said liquid fuels money is needed to care for the roads and that it would take a long time to replenish that amount of money if the majority of it is spent on the project.

Lombard made a motion Wednesday to table awarding the contract to Chuboy until additional funding for the project is secured.

The motion passed unanimously.

Johnson also noted that he requested additional funding during the council’s meeting with Kula for upgrades to two playgrounds in the municipality.

The council also conducted the following business:

– Sold the borough’s old lawn tractor to the highest bidder for $1,751.

– Announced that the borough’s police force will be conducting a Click It or Ticket detail beginning at the end of June through the second week in July.

– Informed area residents that the borough’s street crews are working to repair numerous potholes throughout the municipality.
