Class acts at Storey Square this summer
So, Storey Square is full of life once again as the summer concert series at the Uniontown outdoor venue is well under way for the season. The series has a great line-up this year, and already the first two shows of the year have drawn significant crowds.
Local jazz legend Harold Betters, Pittsburgh based doo-wop group The Softwinds and the Bobby Reed Trio have had their shows already. And, despite recent heat, that hasn’t stopped people from wanting to get out of the air conditioning and hear some good music.
The outside venue is named after the late Walter J. “Buzz” Storey, a local journalist, historian, humorist and World War II veteran who passed away in 2004.
“Storey Square is a great thing because it helps the downtown merchants,” said Mark Rafail, chairman of the board of directors for the Uniontown Downtown Business District Authority. “And it helps get awareness out for the city of Uniontown and how nice the city is looking.”
Rafail added that he wanted to thank National City Bank for stepping up to the plate and sponsoring the entire season.
Other acts this year include:
June 23 – Polish 6 Pack
June 30 – Uniontown Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 47 Band
July 7 – SNAP
July 14 – Sammy Bill Orchestra
July 21 – New Landers
July 28 – Brass Knuckles Band
Aug. 4 – Polish 6 Pack
Aug. 11 – Greater Uniontown Chorale/Scottdale Community Band
Aug. 18 – Roger Humphrey
Aug. 18 – Harold Betters
Rafail said they are always looking for more people to come down.
“There’s always a different food vendor and a different band each week,” he said. “And we’re looking to do a lot more exciting things with downtown Uniontown.”
Now, on a personal note, I have been to several performances at Storey Square over the last couple of years, and all I can say is that I truly think that this is a wonderful thing for this area.
For so long, downtown Uniontown had been a place where you didn’t want to spend your evenings.
However, with venues such as Storey Square providing great entertainment, great food and a fun, family atmosphere, more and more people seem to be wanting to spend time downtown. I know I make plans with my mother several times a summer to catch a show there, and we have a blast.
