Police report man killed in shooting was moving

By Josh Krysak 2 min read

Police say a South Union Township man who killed himself after shooting his ex-girlfriend Tuesday night was in the process of moving from the woman’s residence when the shooting occurred. State police said they found the body of Gary Eperjesi Jr., 37, at 388 A Derrick Ave. after police responded to the residence for a reported shooting.

According to Fayette County Deputy Coroner Jessie Langer, Coroner Dr. Phillip E. Reilly pronounced Eperjesi dead at the scene at 12:05 a.m. Wednesday.

Langer said the cause of death was determined to be a single gunshot wound to the head. Forensic pathologist Dr. Cyril Wecht performed the autopsy.

Langer said the manner of death is pending further investigation by the state police and the coroner’s office.

Police said when they arrived at the residence, they first discovered Eperjesi’s ex-girlfriend, Tammy Wyse, 29, at a neighbor’s home, suffering from a gunshot wound to her upper body.

According to Trooper Michael Irwin, Wyse was shot between 10:30 and 10:45 p.m. Tuesday and was being assisted by Uniontown police when troopers arrived.

Irwin said state troopers and city police officers then set up a perimeter around the house and eventually entered to find Eperjesi dead inside.

Irwin said police set up the perimeter because the only information they initially had was that a man with a gun was inside the home.

He said that Eperjesi’s body was discovered in the kitchen area.

Irwin said Thursday that Wyse remained in stable condition in UPMC-Presbyterian hospital in Pittsburgh after being flown there by medical helicopter from Uniontown Hospital late Tuesday.

Irwin said it appears the shooting occurred during a verbal argument at the home between the couple.

Police said they had been in the process of ending their relationship.

Irwin said Wyse told police that she didn’t really remember exactly how the shooting occurred but after being shot, she was able to run from the home with her two children to a neighbor’s residence.

The neighbor then called police.
