Military acts of valor recognition available
Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hall & Museum Trust Inc. has announced that beginning Tuesday it will be accepting any qualifying Pennsylvanian into the Joseph A. Dugan Jr. Hall of Valor, which was previously offered only to those from southwestern Pennsylvania counties. Once an Allegheny County institution, Soldiers & Sailors in Pittsburgh’s Oakland section now honors men and women statewide who have served the country at home or abroad.
For more than 45 years, Soldiers & Sailors has been inducting men and women who have received medals for acts of valor during military conflicts into its Hall of Valor.
To qualify, a member of the armed forces must have been born, enlisted or lived most of their life in Pennsylvania.
The qualifying medals are: Medal of Honor, Distinguished Service Cross, the Navy Cross, Air Force Cross, Silver Star Medal, Distinguished Flying Cross or the Soldiers Medal.
The trust will assess a processing fee and it will be necessary to provide honorable discharge papers and a copy of the citation (or newspaper article) telling the circumstances for which the medal was awarded. Contact Casey Patterson, chief of staff, at 412-621-4253, ext. 206, or caseyandrea@soldiersandsailorshall.org for applications and additional information.
