Fayette County has done it again. As in the past, the county had several organizations place in the top 50 for the Ugliest Bartender Contest, which raises money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

This year three Uniontown organizations took home the top awards, with Uniontown Volunteer Fire Department placing first, Belmont Inn placing second and Darby’s Pub & Restaurant placing third.

Out of 129 competitors, other Fayette County organizations also placing in the top 50 include Moose Lodge 92 in Perryopolis coming in 11th place, American Legion Post 301 of Connellsville in 31st place, Blue Moon Caf? of Uniontown in 35th place and Ye Olde Inn of Dunbar in 46th place.

Often referred to as the U.G.L.Y. Bartender Contest – U.G.L.Y. is an acronym that stands for Understanding, Generous, Lovable, You – the contest is an annual event that pits bars, restaurants and other organizations against each other to see who can raise the most money for the fight against multiple sclerosis.

Lauren DiMaria, U.G.L.Y. Bartender coordinator for the Allegheny District Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, said Fayette County organizations raised a total of $64,063 this year.

DiMaria said Fayette County raised more money than any other county that participates in the U.G.L.Y. contest, with the exception of Allegheny County. Fayette County is part of the southwestern Pennsylvania division.

“Overall, the southwest contest raised $165,610 in only four weeks,” DiMaria said, noting that the contest was held during April.

In a letter to all contest participants, DiMaria congratulated the top three organizations, all from Uniontown, for raising a combined total of more than $40,000.

“These three alone raised $42,043 within a few miles of each other,” she wrote. “Raising that kind of money certainly takes a considerable amount of time and effort, in addition to great persistence and careful planning. They have gone above and beyond the call of duty each year they have participated and they each deserve a great deal of credit for what they are able to accomplish.”

DiMaria further went on to say that Uniontown has certainly done its part to help eradicate multiple sclerosis by raising money to battle the disease.

Other organizations from the southwestern Pennsylvanian division placing first in their respective counties are as follows: AGA Club of Canonsburg, Washington County (fourth of 129); Roadman-White American Legion 941 of Donegal, Westmoreland County (fifth of 129); and Max & Sam’s of Waynesburg, Greene County (ninth of 129).
