Crash injures 6 people

Six people were injured, three severely, in a two-vehicle crash on Northgate Highway in North Union Township Wednesday morning.

According to state police Trooper Timothy A. Kirsch, the crash occurred at 7:48 a.m., when a Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Matthew Morse of Connellsville and a Toyota 4-Runner driven by Paul Kania of Smock collided. Kirsch said Morse was traveling westbound on Northgate Highway when the car collided with Kania’s vehicle near the intersection with Old Pittsburgh Road.

Morse, 19, – along with passengers Joshua Basinger, 20, of Connellsville and Brandon Bargiband, 14, of Scottdale – suffered severe injuries in the crash.

Medical helicopters flew Basinger and Bargiband to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va. Morse was flown by medical helicopter to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh.

Updates on their conditions were not immediately available.

Kirsch said Morse, along with the passengers in his car, were not wearing seat belts.

Kirsch said Kania, his 4-year-old son and 20-month-old daughter also suffered minor injuries. They were taken by ambulance to Uniontown Hospital. Kirsch noted that all three motorists in Kania’s vehicle were in safety restraints.

According to Fayette County 911, volunteer firefighters from North Union Township and West Leisenring joined emergency personnel from the state police, Uniontown Firemen’s Ambulance, American Ambulance and Fayette EMS at the scene.
