Letter carriers to participate in food drive

2 min read

The National Association of Letter Carriers is holding a food drive on Saturday. The letter carriers of Brownsville, California, Carmichaels, Connellsville, Dunbar, Fairchance, Masontown, Point Marion and Uniontown post offices will be joining thousands of letter carriers across the nation in collecting food to replenish food banks.

This drive has the distinction of being the largest one-day food drive in the nation, said Karen Kapel, chair of the local food drive. Last year cities and towns across America collected 70.7 million pounds of food to help those in need and locally 29,100 pounds of food were collected, she noted.

“This food was collected from you, our generous patrons, and delivered to our local food banks,’ said Kapel. “The summer months are difficult for children facing hunger since most school lunch programs are suspended and families must rely on food banks and pantries to provide needed nourishment.

“We understand high gas prices and the increased cost of food has impacted all of us. Just remember one call can make a difference. We will be collecting canned food items (vegetables, soups, juices) on Saturday.

“Please leave your canned food donation by your mailbox. Your letter carrier, a letter carrier on their day off, or you may see your favorite letter carrier come out of retirement for this special event, will pick up your donation, or if you prefer, you may take your canned donations directly to your local post office lobby. Either way, we ask for your support in this one day food drive,’ added Kapel.
