Community Planting Day scheduled for downtown
The public is invited to meet in Storey Square on Saturday to help plant flowers in downtown Uniontown for the 3rd annual Community Planting Day. Planting will be done rain or shine.
Community Planting Day is once again being co-sponsored by the Fayette Progress Council, with assistance from the Green Gardeners, both of Uniontown.
Volunteers are asked to meet in Storey Square at 9 a.m., where they will then be divided into teams that will plant flowers in areas including the planters along Main and Morgantown streets, Nemacolin Courtyard and Storey Square. The Green Gardeners will host its annual planting day on Monday, which includes planting spring flowers in planters along Morgantown Street, Beeson Boulevard and Marshall Plaza.
At the event on Saturday, volunteers will receive flyers indicating the design scheme of each planter or area to help them complete their team projects. Additionally, the Green Gardeners will provide a demonstration for volunteers on the most-efficient ways to plant flowers. Planting shovels and gloves will be provided for volunteers.
“This event truly promotes a sense of community pride and accomplishment,” said Jessica Hajek, vice president of the Fayette Progress Council. “Obviously, we host this event to attract volunteers to help us plant flowers downtown, but more importantly so city and county residents realize the stake we all have in maintaining the beauty of Uniontown, our county seat.”
Once flowers are planted, downtown merchants “adopt” planters and areas in front of their buildings and water and weed the pots through the fall.
