Philip A. Detweiler Sr., age 74, of Uniontown, Pa., passed away peacefully Friday, May 16, 2008, in the hospice unit… Philip A. Detweiler Sr., age 74, of Uniontown, Pa., passed away peacefully Friday, May 16, 2008, in the hospice unit of Mount Macrina Manor.

He was born May 13, 1934, the son of Berwyn S. Detweiler and Mary Lyndall Jamison Detweiler.

“Phil” graduated from Uniontown High School with the Class of 1952 and enjoyed the planning of celebrations of each class reunion as well as the All-Fayette County and also the All-UHS graduate reunions in central Florida.

He served his country in the United States Army Medical Corps in the 1950’s.

He was an active member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Uniontown.

He also loved to share his love of music and participated in many area choirs and shows, including performances with Uniontown Chorale, SPEBSQUA (the Barbershop chorus) and also the Asbury Chancel Choir.

He was a fifty-year member of Laurel Lodge No. 651 F. & A. M. He was also a member of the Uniontown Lodge of Perfection 14th Degree AASR, Pennsylvania Consistory 32 Degree AASR, Syria Temple AAONMS, Caravan No. 9, B.P.O. Elks 370 in Uniontown, Pa., and the General George C. Marshall AMVETS Post 103 in Hopwood, Pa.

“Phil” inherited his father’s love for people and passion for automotive sales business. In 1966, he opened his Chrysler-Plymouth dealership in downtown Masontown (Pa.) and built the current location in June 1969. He added GMC trucks in 1970 and he acquired Buick, Pontiac and Oldsmobile lines in 1980. With the dealership in the hands of two of his sons, Phil retired in 1996, returning many days to visit with his customers, many of whom had become dear friends.

“Phil” is survived by his wife, Jeanne Sofchek-Arison Detweiler of Uniontown; three sons: Philip Detweiler, Jr. and wife Kathy of Kansas, James Detweiler and wife Doreen of Uniontown, Pa., and Bruce Detweiler and wife Dayna of Hopwood, Pa.; and one daughter, Leigh Mansberry and husband Dave of Uniontown; eight grandchildren: Alicia, Christopher, Maria, Kelly and Amy Detweiler, Joshua, Jacob and Zachary Mansberry; four stepchildren: Chris Constantine and husband Bill of Uniontown, Pa., Peggy Warfield and husband, Gene of Maryland, Bob Arison and wife Becky of Texas, and John Arison and wife, Lois of Uniontown, Pa.; nine grandchildren: Billy and Leah Constantine, Aimee Allamon, Jason and Jonathon Warfield, and Rob, Brett, Ashley and Evan Arison; one great-granddaughter, Lexi Allamon; four brothers: Berwyn S. Detweiler Jr. and wife Lois, Herbert and wife Judy, Nelson and wife Jill, Alan and wife Sandy; and one sister, Marilyn Penney.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the ANDREW D. FERGUSON FUNERAL HOME INC., 80 Morgantown Street, Uniontown, Pa., where the family will receive friends today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. where Visitation will continue on Monday, May 19, 2008, from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m.

A service celebrating Phil’s life will follow at 11 a.m. in ST. PETER’S LUTHERAN CHURCH, 121 Walnut Hill Road, with the Rev. Bernard Carl officiating.

Interment will follow in the Jacobs Lutheran Cemetery

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Phil’s memory to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church Building Fund, 121 Walnut Hill Road, Uniontown, PA 15401 or to Albert Gallatin Hospice, 20 Highland Park Drive, Uniontown, PA 15401.

Laurel Lodge No. 651 F. & A.M. will conduct Funeral Rites at the Funeral Home this evening at 7:30 p.m.

Visitation was also held on Saturday from 7 to 9 p.m.
