Scottdale coupole accused of wire fraud
A Scottdale couple was recently indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on charges of wire fraud. Glenn A. Schwarz, 45, and Joanna M. Schwartz, 41, of 2 Second Ave., are accused of selling counterfeit coupons on eBay, according to the indictment.
The five-count indictment, returned Tuesday, names both Glenn and Joanna Schwartz as defendants, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Mary Beth Buchanan.
According to the indictment, the two attempted to sell items purporting to be genuine coupons on eBay, an Internet auction Web site, when they allegedly knew the coupons were counterfeit and worthless.
Buchanan commended the state police, noting that their investigation led to the indictment.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kay B. Lee presented the case to the grand jury.
The law provides for a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and/or a fine of $250,000.
According to the news release, the actual sentence imposed is based upon the seriousness of the offense and prior criminal history.
An indictment is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt.
