Luncheon set The annual luncheon of the Brownsville Area Schools Alumni Association will be held at noon on Saturday, June 7, at the Thompson House Restaurant in Brownsville.

The slate of officers for the organization will be elected at the luncheon. Norma Ryan will be the guest speaker. There is a cost for the luncheon. Reservations may be made with Betty Gene Bernhagen by calling 724-785-3800. The deadline for reservations is today.

Car show slated

Fayette County Area Vocational-Technical School will host its 9th annual car show from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Cars, trucks and motorcycles can register from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dash plaques will be given to the first 100 vehicles. Trophies will be awarded at 7:30 p.m.

Teachers’ workshop offered

Middle and high school science and math teachers are invited to attend a training workshop offered by Penn State Fayette, the Eberly Campus, and the Center for the Advancement of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Education.

The workshop will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 5, 6 and 7 at Penn State Fayette.

The three-day program will feature an inquiry-based unit called Materials World Modules developed at Northwestern University. The section is designed to train teachers in hands-on learning experiences creating materials used in the real world.

During the sports materials module, teachers will learn how to test and analyze a wide variety of materials used in athletic equipment and then design a suitable material for use in a newly invented game.

Free snacks and lunch will be provided and Act 48 credits can be gained by attending the event.

Summer reading program set

Point Marion Public Library will offer a summer reading program.

Students in preschool to the lower elementary-grade level students from the Point Marion area are invited to attend.

All presentations will be held at 11 a.m. at the library on Ontario Street.

The program schedule is as follows: “Get Buggy,” June 17 with Rick Turcotte of the U.S. Forest Service; “Meet Our Birds,” July 15 with the West Virginia Raptor Rehabilitation Center; and “Butterfly House,” Aug. 5 with Jo Watts and Zoann Callahan.

Reading and math camp offered

All Saints Regional School in Masontown is offering a summer reading and mathematics camp for students in kindergarten through sixth grade.

The summer camp will provide supplemental, age-appropriate instruction in reading and mathematics. It also will provide religious studies, recreational activities and socialization.

The camp is open to all students.

The camp will operate from 9 a.m. to noon Monday, July 7, to Friday, July 18. A daily fee will be charged for attendance at the camp. The cost covers both tuition and a daily brunch.

Parents are responsible for providing transportation to and from the camp.

Additional information may be obtained at the school office or by calling 724-583-2141. The registration deadline is Friday, June 6.

Bridge to reopen

A bridge on Route 1022 (Rolling Hills Estate Road) in North Union Township was expected to reopen to traffic Wednesday evening, earlier than target date of Friday.

Crews are finishing up painting lines and when they are completed, the bridge will open to traffic, according to the state Department of Transportation District 12.

The bridge is located between Bute Road and Gallatin Avenue Extension and it carries Rolling Hills Estate Road over Route 119.
