Uniontown City Hall evacuated for smoke

By Josh Krysak 1 min read

Uniontown City Hall was evacuated for about 25 minutes Wednesday morning after a fire in an air-conditioning unit filled the building with smoke. About a dozen people who had been working in the building on North Gallatin Avenue gathered outside shortly before 9 a.m. as firefighters swept the building.

After ensuring that the building was not on fire, firefighters set up fans to ventilate the thick smoke accumulating inside the structure.

According to fire Chief Myron Nypaver, the smoke was caused from a blown pump in an air-conditioning unit.

Nypaver said that the building did not sustain any structural damage from the burned equipment but did note that quite a bit of smoke had accumulated on the second floor.

City police directed traffic at the intersection of Gallatin Avenue and Penn Street, while firefighters worked at the scene.

In addition to the city’s police and fire departments, emergency personnel from Uniontown Firemen’s Ambulance also responded to the fire call.
