Mahlon A. Harvey
Born: May 13, 1929 Died: September 5, 2008
Mahlon A. Harvey, age 79, of Huntsville, Alabama, passed away Friday morning, September 5, 2008.
Mr. Harvey was born in Fairchance, Pennsylvania, the Son of James Oscar Harvey and Helen Loraine (Guthrie) Harvey.
He graduated from the now former Fairchance High School in 1947, Waynesburg College (now Waynesburg University) in Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, and also from Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
He worked for over 20 years as a Research Engineer with the United States Steel Corporation in Monroeville, Pennsylvania.
He then worked for Thiokol in Ogden, Utah, and also in Huntsville, Alabama, as a Hazardous Materials Safety Engineer.
Mr. Harvey spent much of his “leisure” time in service activities. He coached Little League, was a Boy Scout Troop leader, Junior Achievement advisor, delivered food with Meals on Wheels and was a senior citizen volunteer with the Huntsville Police Department.
His other activities included numismatics, a 50-year member of the Masons, a Shriner, and active membership at Hope Presbyterian Church in Huntsville.
Mr. Harvey had contracted polio at nine months of age and had limited use of his left arm and leg. He would never allow his afflictions to limit his accomplishments! The word “can’t” was not a word he used.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, a Brother, Myron Harvey of Fairchance, Pennsylvania, a Grandson, Derrik Lee Harvey of Marion, Indiana, and Granddaughter, Miranda Marie Harvey of Marion, Indiana.
Mr. Harvey’s wife of 56 years, Lula (Myers) Harvey, survives. His sister, Sheila (Harvey) Kostewicz lives in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. His son and his wife, Urbin G. and Carol A. Harvey live in Marion, Indiana. His daughter and her husband, Cynthia J. (Harvey) and Robert Robertson live in Tampa, Florida. He also has three Grandchildren: Logan Harvey, Melissa Robertson and Cassandra Robertson.
A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, September 9, at 11 a.m. at the HOPE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH in Huntsville, Alabama, with Rev. Sam Hobson officiating.
Mr. Harvey’s remains will be interred in Fairchance, Pennsylvania.
The Family wishes that no flowers be sent but would appreciate donations be made to Hope Presbyterian Church, 10001 Bailey Cove Road, Huntsville, AL 35803.
