Masontown council to use state grant money on truck, building repairs
Council unanimously voted to purchase a half-ton pickup truck through the state piggyback program for $20,600. Councilman Frank McLaughlin said the truck is a 2008 and that the price includes a trailer hitch and wiring.
The borough recently received a $25,000 grant from the state Department of Community and Economic Development.
Council President Harry Lee said terms of the grant state that $8,000 must be used for repairs to the borough building.
Council members agreed that the remaining amount of the grant, or $17,000, will be put toward the purchase of the truck.
Carole Daniels, who oversees the finance committee, said the borough has enough money in its account to pay the remaining $3,600 for the truck that is not covered by the grant.
As for other financial matters, Daniels announced the finance committee has met once and will continue to meet while preparing the 2009 budget.
Daniels said herself and council members Kay Rendina and Edward Gulino are on the finance committee.
In unrelated business, council agreed to post a part-time borough position. Council said the borough will advertise the position if no union members are interested in the job, according to contract.
Council also announced that members discussed hiring Kim Essig to do grant writing for the borough at a work session held Monday.
Council said an upcoming meeting with the state Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) was also discussed during the work session. The meeting with DEP will be held today in Pittsburgh and will be attended by Lee and Daniels, council said.
The next council meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. Sept. 23 in the borough building.
