Smithfield council to tackle noise problems
Borough solicitor Gene Grimm said he is working on the ordinance and should have it ready by next month’s meeting, which is scheduled for 6 p.m. Oct. 21 in the borough building. Grimm said the ordinance will be comprehensive and cover several different nuisances residents complain about.
At last month’s meeting, a borough resident approached council and asked that something be done to prevent loud dirt bikes and all-terrain vehicles from causing a nuisance at odd hours.
Residents have also complained about loud music from vehicles.
Grimm said the ordinance will give the borough police officer authority to cite those are found guilty of such infractions.
As for other business, council discussed a drainage project on Liberty Street.
Council President Jack Frith said he hopes the project can be completed before winter because water runs onto the road and freezes, causing a safety hazard.
“We can’t have that water running on the street again this winter,” he said.
In other matters, council announced trick-or-treat will be held from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Oct. 25. Residents wishing to participate are asked to turn on their porch lights.
Prior to trick-or-treat, a Halloween March will be held at the borough building from 3 to 4:30 p.m., at which time treats will be handed out.
