Eugene “Buck” Cunningham
Eugene “Buck” Cunningham, 89, of Smithfield, Pa. passed away peacefully after being cared for by his loving family, on Saturday, September 27, 2008, in Golden Living Center, Uniontown, Pa. He was born February 15, 1919, in Job, West Virginia, son of the late Charles Cunningham and Viola Mae White Cunningham.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Edith Brewer Cunning-ham; son, Ron Cunningham; five sisters: Mary, Margie, Mabel, Myrtle and Helen and a brother, Roy. He was the last surviving member of his parents’ immediate family.
Buck was employed for many years as a truck driver and miner in the coal and coke industry of our area. After retirement, he and his wife Edith were the owners and operators of the former Cunningham’s Dairy Deluxe and Restaurant on Route 21 in McClellandtown, Pa. for many years. He also loved to work in his garden and raise vegetables to give them away to his friends. He was a very giving, loving and compassionate person to everyone he met.
He was a member of the Teamsters Union and the United Mine Workers of America and a former member of the York Run Grange. He also attended the White House Free Methodist Church.
Surviving are his loving children: Donna J. Culleton, Uniontown, Pa. and Charles “Chuck” Cunningham, Smithfield, Pa.; seven grandchildren: Michelle Cole, Ron Cunningham and wife, Lisa, Kim Barone and husband, Mike, Tom Cunningham, Don Cunningham and wife, Beth, Jamie Riffle and husband, John and Jeanie Cunningham; ten great-grandchildren; special friend, Lenny Barone, Belmont, Ohio; devoted brother-in-law, Ray Brewer and his family, Cindy and Shawn; sister-in-law, Marie Glotfelty, Washington, Pa.; nieces and nephews and his close pets he loved, Buddy and Jasper.
The family will receive friends in the DEAN C. WHITMARSH FUNERAL HOME, 134 West Church Street, Fairchance, Pa. today, from 7-9 p.m., Monday 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. and on Tuesday, September 30, 2008 until 11 a.m. the hour of service with Rev. George W. McLaughlin officiating.
Interment will follow in Mountain View Memorial Park, Brownfield, Pa.
