Local Christians mark Palm Sunday

2 min read

Christians representing several religious denominations joined together Sunday to celebrate the beginning of Holy Week. Churches in Connellsville and Dawson participated in the annual Palm Sunday event, with services being held in both the city and borough. In Connellsville, congregations gathered at their respective churches and converged at Lions Square for the service.

The Rev. Brian Higbee of the City Church of Connellsville said pastors who are part of the Connellsville Area Ministerial Association spoke during the service, telling the story of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem, followed by Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection.

“Way back when we decided to, as a ministerial association, come together and really celebrate Palm Sunday,” Higbee said, noting that the service attracted about 175 to 200 people.

“When we all come together there really is something special about that. It was a tremendous experience,” Higbee said.

In Dawson, churchgoers converged at the Dawson Baptist Church for a service before processing to the Cochran Memorial United Methodist Church for the conclusion of the service.

The Rev. David Bell, pastor of Cochran Memorial, said members of both congregations carried palms as they made the procession.

Bell said the Palm Sunday worship service involving both churches has occurred 25 to 30 years.

“Last year it was rainy and snowy when we did it, but this year was sunny and beautiful,” he said.
