Election board seeks consolidations of districts in Masontown

2 min read

The Fayette County Election Board has asked a judge to approve consolidations of districts in various municipalities and to redraw boundary lines in Masontown. The requests for changes come several weeks after the board, which is comprised of county commissioners Angela M. Zimmerlink, Vincent A. Vicites and Vincent Zapotosky, voted to request the changes. The petitions requests changes in Masontown, and Nicholson, German and Perry townships.

The petition, filed by board of elections solicitor Sheryl Heid, asks that three districts in Masontown be merged into two. Currently, District 1 votes at the VFW on River Avenue; District 2 votes at the Masontown Volunteer Fire Department and District 3 votes at Fort Mason Village.

The petition eliminates the Fort Mason polling place and divvies up 2,200 electors between the VFW and the fire department.

In Nicholson Township, the petition requests combining Districts 2 and 3 into one district, which will be the second one. The voters in the combined districts would cast ballots at the New Geneva Baptist Church in New Geneva.

Currently, those in District 2 cast ballots at the home of Wilma Rhode in Martin and those in District 3 vote at the home of Andy Matejcik in Grays Landing.

If approved, the change will affect 449 voters.

Heid also requested that Districts 2 and 7 in German Township be combined into one district, which would be considered the second.

Now, voters in District 2 cast ballots at Wonder’s Machine Shop in Gates. Those in District 7 vote at the German Township Municipal Building in McClellandtown.

The combined district, which consists of 377 voters, would cast ballots at the municipal building.

Perry Township voters in District 1 and 3 would be consolidated to become District 1 under the petition’s plan.

District 1 voters currently cast ballots at the Wickhaven Post Office in Wickhaven. The third district’s voters went to the Perry Township Building in Star Junction.

The combined districts, which include 1,333 voters, would send electors to the township building.
