William E. “Bud” Moyer
William E. “Bud” Moyer, 82, of Lemont Furnace, passed on at his home, in the loving presence of his family, Wednesday, April 8, 2009. “Bud” was born January 15, 1927, at Mt. Independence, Pa., son of Andrew Curtis Moyer and Mary Matthews Moyer.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by daughter, Janet “Kim” Moyer Karschner, M.D. and a brother, George Curtis Moyer.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Frances Furin Moyer; daughter, Becky Wilcosky and her husband, Larry and daughter, Brittany of Uniontown; son, Ben Moyer and his wife, Kathy of Farmington; brother, James K. Moyer and his wife, Althea of Lemont Furnace; granddaughter, Colleen Moyer and her fianc?, Dale Davis, Jr. of Smithfield; grandson, Aaron Moyer of Slippery Rock, Pa.; nieces: Zelda Moyer and Mona Collins both of Lemont Furnace; and nephew, Jeffrey Moyer of Wind Ridge, Pa.
Bud graduated from North Union High School, class of 1944, and attended Waynesburg College.
He served honorably with the United States Army, 20th Infantry Regiment, from 1945 to 1947, and was awarded the World War II Victory Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal.
Upon his return home from armed service, he enjoyed playing County League baseball and talked joyfully about the game and his fellow players until the end of his life.
For many years Bud, together with his brother Jim, operated A. C. Moyer Company in Lemont Furnace. He was warmly esteemed by his many friends in the construction industry and in municipal government throughout Fayette, Greene and Washington counties.
In earlier years, Bud also worked at Eureka Fire Brick Works in Mt. Braddock, and the Appalachian Stone Division of Martin Marietta Corporation.
Bud was always proud of his community and served it in many capacities. He served in the early 1950’s on the North Union Township board of supervisors, was a charter member of the Uniontown Lions Club, a member of the Izaak Walton League, Uniontown Chapter, and served on the boards of directors of the Uniontown Savings and Loan and the Pleasant Valley Country Club. He also valued his membership in the American Society of Highway Engineers.
Friends, neighbors, associates and family remember Bud for his warm friendly personality, his agile wit and his ready sense of humor. He looked forward every summer to cultivating his vegetable garden, the fruits of which he shared widely. He was especially fond of saving and trading seeds with neighbors and friends.
Golf grew to be a favorite pastime of Bud’s but he always enjoyed the company of friends and family on the course more than an exemplary score.
His approach to fishing and hunting, which he enjoyed throughout life, was the same. The number of fish, birds or deer collected was not Bud’s object. Rather, he valued sharing outdoor experience with his son, daughters, grandson, granddaughter, brothers, in-laws and friends.
Bud will be deeply missed, but joyfully remembered, by all who loved him and who knew his love, friendship and warmth in return.
Friends will be received today, April 10. from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m., and until 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 11, in the STEPHEN R. HAKY FUNERAL HOME, 603 North Gallatin Avenue Extension, Uniontown.
A Memorial Service will be held in the Funeral Home Chapel at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday with the Rev. Michael Crookston, a personal friend, officiating.
Burial will follow in Sylvan Heights Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made, in memory of Bud’s daughter, Dr. Kim Karschner, to the Western Pennsylvania National Wild Animal Orphanage, 169 Sheperd Lane, Uniontown, PA 15401, or to the Fayette County SPCA, 215 Rankin Airshaft Road, Uniontown, PA 15401.
