Civic Club names girls of month
Emily Anne Polhemus, Maura N. Andrews and Jordan Rae Duke, seniors at Carmichaels Area High School, have been named Girl of the Month for January, February and March, respectively, by Carmichaels Area Women’s Civic Club. Polhemus, the daughter of Chris and Kathy Polhemus of Carmichaels, is a member of the National Honor Society, Student Council, Senior Standing Committee and school newspaper staff, is a varsity cheerleader and plays varsity soccer. Outside of school, she is working toward obtaining a private pilot’s license, is a member of the Interscholastic Equestrian Team in Peters Township and is a member of the Greene County traveling soccer team.
Polhemus plans to attend a four-year university and participate on the varsity equestrian team and then attend graduate school for veterinary medicine.
Or, she said she will attend the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and major in political science.
Andrews, the daughter of Greg and Cheryl Andrews of Carmichaels, is a member of the National Honor Society, Senior High Student Council, Senior Standing Committee and the Hatfield Environmental Awareness Team.
She is also president of SADD, editor of the school yearbook, and participates in the EMT course offered through the high school. Last year she received the Rachel Carson Book Award.
She currently maintains a 4.0 grade point average.
Outside of school, she volunteers for the Greene County Tobacco Control Program and Communities That Care and is a member of the Greene Valley Presbyterian Church.
She is currently the reigning 2008 Bituminous Coal Queen, which allows her to participate in various activities.
After high school, Andrews plans to attend the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia and major in pharmacy. After six years of schooling, she hopes to become a Doctor of Pharmacy.
Duke, the daughter of Greg and Rae Lyn Duke of Carmichaels, is vice president of the senior class, a member of Student Council and Senior Standing Committee and captain of the varsity basketball and volleyball teams.
She was named to Who’s Who Among American High School Students and High School Athletics.
Duke was named to the All-County and WPIAL section teams for basketball, and she was the fifth girl to score 1,000 points in Carmichaels girl’s basketball history.
Outside of school, she enjoys tutoring elementary students, organizing basketball clinics for elementary girls and playing on an AAU basketball traveling team.
Duke plans to attend college, major in education and play basketball.
