Clay claims title in beef cattle show

Hunter Clay of Perryopolis showed the grand champion 4-H heifer at Wednesday’s beef cattle show in the Indoor Arena at the Fayette County Fair, while Jacob Diamond of Smithfield took reserve grand champion. Clay, 13, son of John and Jillian Clay, said he felt excited to win and complimented his Simmental, saying, “She’s pretty nice.” But he noted, “Anybody can win. You’ve got to try your best.”

Diamond, 16, son of Chris and Linda Diamond, also won with a Simmental and remarked, “We bred the calf and had her mom. I’ve shown her mom and it was nice keeping it in the family.”

Both Clay and Diamond said the competition was tough.

“There were a lot of nice heifers,” said Clay, who is an eighth-grade student at Frazier Middle School.

Diamond, who is a senior at Albert Gallatin Senior High School, said, “Hunter had a really good heifer.”

Clay has been involved in 4-H for five years and has beef cattle and swine projects.

“I like to come out here and show and make the best better,” he said.

Diamond has been in 4-H for eight years and also has lamb, goat and swine projects. He won master showman in Tuesday’s swine showmanship competition.

He said he likes 4-H because of “being able to come (to the fair) with all your friends and have fun. It’s a great reward for hard work all year long.”

The 4-H results for the beef show included: Angus – Billy Work, champion; Crossbreeds -Jessica Butler, champion and reserve champion; Simmental – Hunter Clay, champion; Jacob Diamond, reserve champion; other breeds – Toni Marie DeCarlo, champion. Open class: Angus – William Work, champion female; J.J. Angus, reserve champion female and champion bull; Crossbreeds: Paul Keslar, champion and reserve champion female; Tim Mills, champion bull; Ian Erdely, reserve champion bull; Herefords – Triple Creek Farm, grand and reserve champion heifer; Debbie D’Isidoro, champion bull and supreme champion bull; Shorthorn – Kylie Sage-Hamborsky, cow and calf champion; Lyn Hamborsky, reserve champion; Simmental – Hunter Clay, champion heifer; Jacob Diamond, reserve champion; others – Toni Marie DeCarlo, champion heifer; and Ian Erdely, champion bull.

Dairy goat competition: Becky Perhach won best doe and best udder in 4-H competition.

Perhach, 16, daughter of Duane and Diann Perhach of Monongahela, said of the win with her Nubian goat, “That was great. We felt good.”

Other 4-H results included: Alpine – Lacy Zitney, grand champion; Becky Perhach, reserve champion; Nubian – Becky Perhach, grand and reserve champion; All other purebreds – Lacy Zitney, grand and reserve champion; Recorded grade – Becky Perhach – grand and reserve. Open class: Alpine – Keeley McVey, grand and reserve champion; Lamancha – Shawn Spiker, grand champion; Joan Serwinski, reserve champion; Nubian – Shawn Spiker, grand champion; Becky Perhach, reserve champion; Saanen – Shawn Spiker, grand and reserve champion; all other purebreds – Joan Serwinski, grand and reserve champion; Recorded grade – Diann Perhach, grand champion; Shawn Spiker, reserve champion. Best doe in show – Shawn Spiker with a Lamancha. Best udder – Joan Serwinski with a Toggenburg.

4-H market swine: Linda Diamond reported the Tuesday night show included 131 entries, and said, “The judge said he was very impressed to find this quality in Fayette County.”

Results for the show included: grand champion – Lauren Diamond of Smithfield, which was also county-bred champion; and Andrew Hudock of Uniontown, reserve grand champion. Champions in weight classes included: Division I – Alyssa Tabaj of New Salem, champion; Elizabeth Costabile of Uniontown, reserve champion; Division II – John Tabaj of New Salem, champion; Lane Vance, reserve champion; Division III – Lauren Diamond of Smithfield, champion; William Work of Uniontown, reserve champion; Division IV – Andrew Hudock, champion; Ronald Ritenour of Melcroft, reserve champion.
