Police save opossums to protect residents

1 min read

A Uniontown police officer did more than just protect city residents Tuesday night when he saved a family of opossums stuck in the street. Officer Ray Miller said police were dispatched to the intersection of South Mount Vernon Avenue and Wood Street shortly after 10 p.m. for a report of an opossum that had been struck by a car and was “trying to attack people.” Miller said he found the animal in the street and realized that the opossum had birthed several baby opossums and that a few of them had been hit and killed by motorists, causing the animal’s angst.

Miller said he contacted the state Game Commission regarding the incident and officials declined to respond to help the animals.

So, utilizing a broom and garbage can borrowed from residents nearby, Miller said he was able to coax the opossum and the surviving babies into the can.

Miller said he then transported the animals to a wooded area and released them.
