Police investigating bazaar burglary
Uniontown police are investigating a burglary early Wednesday in which it appears the suspects broke into a home, used a car they stole to make fraudulent purchases and then dropped the vehicle back off at the owner’s home. Police Detective Donald M. Gmitter said police were called to the home of John and Rebecca Manches on Jacob Street shortly before 7 a.m. Gmitter said police discovered that while the couple was sleeping, someone broke into their home and stole multiple items, including a 42-inch flat-screen television, three video game systems, a digital camera and bank and credit cards.
Additionally, a 2002 yellow Kawasaki motorcycle was stolen from the home, Gmitter said.
Gmitter said that the suspects also took the keys to the couple’s Pontiac G6 and drove the car to the Wal-Mart Supercenter in South Union Township, where they used the stolen debit and credit cards to make multiple purchases.
After using the stolen cards, Gmitter said the suspects then returned to the home and parked the car outside the home before fleeing the scene.
John Manches told police that he realized that someone had driven his car when he noticed that the sunroof was open and that the car smelled like smoke.
Gmitter said that the car also was found in a different parking spot, and noted that another car owned by the couple was moved sometime during the heist.
He said that the state police Records and Identification Unit was called to process the scene for forensic evidence.
Gmitter said the burglary remains under investigation.
